Scouting offers young people the chance to have fun, learn new things and to develop new friendships. It provides exciting activities and games and opportunities to gain badges and awards. Through Scouting, young people can acquire the skills and knowledge that can be used for the rest of their lives.

Being a volunteer in Scouting can be incredibly rewarding;  it can also enhance your CV and provide charity trustee experience.

Chair of the County Board of Trustees

The County Board of Trustees (or Executive Committee) plays a vital role in the running of Gloucestershire Scouts. Our Board of Trustees provide strategic direction & governance, carry out administrative tasks and support the County Leadership Team to develop Scouting provision within Gloucestershire.

The Chair will lead the Trustee Board, ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities within the County and works closely with County Commissioner and County Youth Commissioner.

The role is responsible to the County Scout Council and is responsible for the other Trustees.

Time commitment: Chairing of 6 Board meetings per annum (circa 2 hours per meeting), regular monthly catch ups with the County Commissioner and occasional other meetings.

Deputy County Commissioner (Programme)

The Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) (Programme) has responsibility for the strategic direction of programme in the county, as well as overall leadership and management of the County’s Programme Team with particular emphasis on programme delivery and programme support.


As a member of the County’s senior leadership team, the DCC (Programme) works in partnership with the County Commissioner and the County Leadership Team to ensure that scouting in Gloucestershire:

  • Lives by its values, meets its purpose, and is delivered using its methods.
  • Adheres to the Scout Association’s policies.
  • Is delivered in partnership between adults and young people.

The role is responsible to the County Commissioner and is responsible for the Assistant County Commissioners for: section support, DofE and Top Awards, Adventurous Activities, International and County Active Support Units.

Time and resources commitment: The DCC (Programme) volunteer role is an important one because they are responsible for leading and managing a relatively large but highly capable and experienced team.

Assistant County Commissioner for Explorers

Our 14-18 year olds are amazing and they deserve, like every other young person, the best possible programme. As an ACC for Explorers you will support DESCs and Explorer Leaders in helping them to deliver the best possible opportunities and a high quality programme.

Ideally you will:

  • Understand the Explorer Programme and how it can be implemented.
  • Be a good communicator.
  • Demonstrate a Pro-active approach
  • Be good with people.
  • Be willing to learn.
This role is all about supporting volunteers to enable them to do their best for young people, this could be by providing advice and guidance, enabling sharing of best practice or leading on projects and activities focused on enabling Explorers to experience brilliant Youth Shaped programmes.

You will get lots of support and will really be able to help make Scouting in Gloucestershire even better!

Gloucestershire Scout Activities Support Unit (SASU) Manager

We have now formally established the Gloucestershire Scout Activities Support Unit (SASU).

The purpose of the SASU is to support Young People and Adults in undertaking activities (for fun), permit training and permit assessments across the County.

The SASU needs a manager – could this be you or someone you know? Ideally we would like someone who doesn’t have other roles so that they can focus on establishing the SASU, however, applications are open to anyone over the age of 18 so please contact us to discuss further if you are interested.

The Manager is responsible for the management, leadership and day-to-day running of the SASU. They will work under the Leadership of the ACC – Activities, alongside the MAPS to support the provision of permit assessments and provide Line Management of the Skills Instructors. The Manager will ensure the SASU agreement is reviewed annually to ensure that the targets set are being accomplished.

County Media & Comms Manager

As you will all know, effective communications are at the heart of effective Scouting amongst adults. With this in mind, the County Commissioner wants to place a significant focus on how we can use communications effectively together to achieve amazing Scouting across Gloucestershire. This new role will involve:

  • Working with the Senior Leadership team to develop a communication strategy that reflects our National and County brand and tone of voice.
  • Working with our “Web Monkeys” team and magazine editor to develop our outward facing website and our information for our adults in Scouting.
  • Liaise with Districts to support County-wide communication strategy.
  • Helping adults get the information they need, when they need it.
