BTEC Programme
At Gloucestershire Scouts we offer a new level 2 (GCSE level) qualification for Young Leaders:
BTEC Level 2 in Teamwork and Personal Development in the community
This is a technical qualification, nationally recognised by universities and employers, which recognises what you have done in Scouting – giving you the due credit for your efforts and which doesn’t ask you to do it again!
There are two levels you can go for:
- The Diploma (6 units) or
- Extended certificate (3 units).
Everyone completes module 1 and then you can choose 2 or 5 optional units from the list below.
The BTEC Teamwork and Personal Development in the community is only open to those aged at least 16 but under 18 on 1st September.
Recognised Prior Learning (RPL):
The great news is that if you have completed your Young Leader Award and / or DofE most of the practical work is already completed through recognised prior learning (RPL).
This recognises previous work you have done. Some of our awards and activities fall into this category.
Examples include:
(a) Duke of Edinburgh Expedition gives full exemption to two work units (6 & 7).
(b) The Young Leader Belt Buckle gives full exemption to one work unit (11).
(c) If you have GCSE PE at Grade 4 or above this gives full exemption to one work unit (4)
(d) Various scout awards offer other exemptions
Examples (a) and (b) together also give you 50% completion of three other units (including the Mandatory Unit). So, these alone will give you approx. 90% of the Extended Certificate or 75% of the BTEC Diploma before you even start work on registration day! The outstanding bits are typically done on that one day.
If you register for the Gloucestershire Scouts 2026/27 cohort:
- It is free (we do ask for £5 towards the cost of the hall on registration day).
- Choose from the two levels of qualification available:
- Extended Certificate (Mandatory Unit plus 2 optional units) or
- Diploma (Mandatory Unit plus 5 optional units). (Recommended)
- It can be done on-line or mixed mode.
2026/27 launches with an Initial Advice & Guidance (IAG) session on Saturday 26th September 2026.
Attendance at this session will complete registration, the Mandatory Unit and up to two optional units under the guidance of our tutors from Cadet Vocational College (CVC).
To request a place at the IAG to be held at Murray Hall, Gloucester please use this link or use the Book now button
Successful applicants will be required to share their OSM record with the County Gargoyle YL Unit as all further information including joining instructions will be via this route.
