Adult awards

Adults in Scouting are amazing, they give up their time to volunteer in so many ways to help provide Skills for life for the 5,000+ young people involved in Scouting across the whole of Gloucestershire.

We want to thank all our volunteers for their contribution to the Scouts – it’s an important way to make sure people stay with us and to recognise their achievements and Good Service awards are one way of doing this.

More locally we have the Inspiring Programme Award, Gloucestershire County Award and the Gloucestershire County Scout Council Hero Award.

Good service awards

If you would like to nominate an adult in Scouting for a Good Service award such as the Lead Volunteer’s Commendation, Chief Scout’s Commendation or the award for merit, please visit the Scouts webpage that describes the award scheme and the critera for the awards.

If you would like to continue, download and complete a copy of the form and send it to your local District Awards Team or your District Lead Volunteer.

Gloucestershire County Scout Council Hero Award

Roger Tovey first became an assistant leader in 1963. Over the following decades, he undertook a variety of roles including Venture Scout Leader, District Chair and District Commissioner in Gloucester District. In 2017, he took on the role of County Treasurer. Although he stood down from that role in 2021, he continued as a Trustee of the County until he ‘went home’ in January 2023.

Given Roger’s dedication to Scouting and his support of other charities within Gloucestershire and abroad, the Trustees have agreed to create a “Hero” award in his memory. This is an annual award with presentations being made each year at the County AGM in September.

Who can be nominated for the Hero Award?

Anyone who is a member or a friend of Gloucestershire Scouts (young person or adult) can be nominated for this award.

Reasons for the nomination may be because someone has:

  • Been involved in a huge fundraising effort
  • Supported an individual or member of the community
  • Supported local scouting in a unique way
  • Shown fantastic citizenship
  • Overcome adversity
  • Completed something amazing that you want to tell us about
  • The award recognises both extraordinary singular actions and sustained heroic behaviour.

Who can nominate someone for the Hero Award and how?

Any member of Gloucestershire Scouts can nominate someone who they think is a hero.

Nominations can be made by completing this form: Gloucestershire Scouts Hero Award Nomination.

Nominations will be considered by the County awards and recognition team, and an announcement will be made at the County AGM each September.

Inspiring Programme Award

We believe it is important to recognise those amazing leaders and their teams who are providing inspiring programmes to young people across the county. This is a scarf was designed as a way to give recognition and celebrate leaders doing this.

You can see the Hall of Fame of previous winners here.

How it works

There is a nomination period twice a year, where we ask for nominations, from the leaders’ peers, young people, parents or via DCs, of leaders who have demonstrated the award criteria.
Nominations can be made at any time via the form below and will be reviewed six monthly by a panel that will be made up of the:

  • Deputy County Commissioner Programme
  • A District Commissioner – not from the nominee’s district
  • County Youth Commissioner
  • A Young Leader

The Criteria

Our aim is to keep the criteria simple we ask those nominating to consider if the nominee:

  • Is an Amazing Leader,
  • Delivers inspiring programmes shaped by young people that make an impact in our communities,
  • Is well recognised as delivering and driving a challenging, relevant and rewarding programme for every young person.

Leaders can be nominated as individuals or as part of a team. We try to encourage nominations for a leader for each section in each district every year. The scarf will then be awarded as part of the county annual presentation evening or AGM with a follow up presentation at their group if they want that to happen.

If you want to nominate someone for the Inspiring Programme Award, please visit this page.

Gloucestershire County Award

The Gloucestershire County Award acknowledges ‘outstanding’ contributions to Scouting in Gloucestershire – usually by non-uniformed persons at group and district level.

The awards are normally presented to those who deserve recognition of their contributions but who, for whatever reason, do not fall within the criteria for an award. The awards will normally be presented annually at the Gloucestershire county AGM.
